Every year on April 20th, cannabis connoisseurs and casual consumers alike come together to celebrate the plant that’s sparked a movement, a culture, and let’s be honest — a really good time.

But for all the memes, munchies, and clouds of smoke, a lot of people don’t actually know how or why this holiday became a thing. Luckily, the Hennep team is here to break it down nice and easy. Think of it as your 420 crash course, Cape Cod style.

So… What Is 420 Anyway?

April 20th is a date that’s become synonymous with cannabis culture. But where did this magic 420 number come from? Spoiler alert: It’s not a police code for marijuana use.

The most widely accepted origin of “420” dates back to California in the 1970s. A group of high school friends who called themselves “The Waldos” (because they always hung out by the same wall) would meet up after school at exactly 4:20 PM to sneak off and smoke. They picked that time because it was right after their extracurricular activities wrapped up. So, “420” quickly became their code word for a secret sesh — and like the best inside jokes, it caught on. Eventually, this term spread beyond their friend group, then throughout California, where The Grateful Dead also played a role in popularizing the term.

On December 28, 1990, a group of Deadheads in Oakland handed out flyers inviting people to meet and smoke at 4:20 PM on April 20th. One of those flyers made its way to Steve Bloom, a reporter for High Times magazine at the time. The magazine published the flyer in 1991 and kept referencing “420” in articles and events. Before long, it caught on as a universal code for cannabis, and eventually became the official holiday for stoners everywhere.
